[W-GCR] Top 3 Value Golf Destinations 6/18/2024

Since December 2022, AGL has been publishing the World-Golf Consumer Report (W-GCR) regularly by collecting and analyzing tee time statistics and golf travel data from affiliated channels. This edition focuses on the top 3 golf destinations for cost-effectiveness, evaluating not just green fees, cart fees, and caddie fees, but also round-trip airfare and flight times.

"Value for money" refers to getting the best performance or quality for the price paid. It emphasizes finding products that offer more satisfaction at a lower cost if similar quality is available or a higher quality product at the same price. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, golfers have increasingly prioritized value for money in their golf travels, and Southeast Asian countries, known for their value-for-money golf experiences, have become a bustling destination for Korean golfers.

This report compares the average golf costs per person, including round-trip airfare, for five Southeast Asian countries: Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Indonesia. These countries were selected based on the preferences of AGL's global golf course reservation service users. Vietnam, a top travel destination in Southeast Asia, was excluded due to recent increases in golf and airfare costs.

Last year, golfers who traveled abroad via AGL’s affiliated channels spent approximately 150,000 KRW per round. The costs in the aforementioned countries were quite similar. Due to the inclusion of cart and caddie fees in green fees at many Southeast Asian golf courses, there was no significant cost difference. However, when considering direct flights from Incheon Airport on the same dates, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia offered the best value for money.

Clark, Philippines: Affordable Airfare and Short Travel Time

In the Philippines, golfers can enjoy courses in Manila, Clark, Cebu, and other locations. Among these, Clark is particularly favored by golfers. The flight time is only about 4 hours, and round-trip airfare is reasonably priced, typically in the early 300,000 KRW range. Although there are not many golf courses, the ones available are excellent, and the area around the golf courses is well-equipped with attractions and accommodations.

Clark is located within an hour's drive from both the airport and the city center. While additional charges for cart fees, caddie fees, and food and beverage vouchers apply, the green fees are low. The cost for a single cart is around 800-1,000 pesos (approximately 23,000 KRW), and a single caddie is about 500-600 pesos (around 15,000 KRW), making it quite affordable.

  • Pradera Verde Golf & Country Club

This course, which has been open for less than 10 years, is about an hour's drive from Clark airport and the city center. It features top-quality grass and excellent course maintenance. The flat, wide fairways make it an easy and enjoyable course for beginner golfers.

  • Mimosa Plus Golf Course

Located just 10 minutes from Clark airport, this course boasts excellent accessibility. Designed by Nelson & Haworth, the 36-hole course is famous for having hosted Tiger Woods. Although it has been open for 30 years, recent renovations have earned it recognition as one of the best courses in the Philippines.

  • Luisita Golf and Country Club

About a 40-minute drive north of Clark airport, this course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and has been ranked among the World’s Top 100 Courses by Golf Magazine. A notable feature is that only highly skilled male caddies are employed here.

Thailand: A Steady Favorite for Golf Travel with Extensive Options

Thailand is a beloved golf travel destination for Korean golfers. Not only is it affordable, but the country also offers a wide range of unique golf courses across various regions, making it challenging to decide which courses to play during your trip. Thai golf courses generally include a cart and a caddie for each player, with caddie tips being paid in cash directly to the caddie after the round. Caddie tips typically range from 400 to 500 baht (about 15,000 to 20,000 KRW) for an 18-hole round.

  • Chiang Mai: Gassan Legacy Golf Club

Chiang Mai boasts many excellent golf courses, but Gassan Legacy stands out for its exceptional value, with green fees being about half of those at other local courses. There are also packages available that link with other Gassan courses like Gassan Panorama and Gassan Khuntan, and the golf hotel facilities are well-equipped. Despite the low price, the course quality is among the best in Chiang Mai. Additionally, the off-season from June to August offers comfortable playing conditions without excessive heat.

  • Bangkok: Siam Country Club Bangkok

This is the fifth golf course in the renowned Siam Country Club chain and the only one located in Bangkok. Alongside Alpine Country Club, it is one of the premier golf courses in Bangkok. It is conveniently located about 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport, and the course maintenance is superb.

  • Pattaya: Laem Chabang International Country Club

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this prestigious golf course is about a 30-minute drive from Pattaya city center. It features 27 holes spread across three 9-hole courses, each with distinct characteristics. The course has hosted numerous major Thai professional tournaments and frequently ranks among Thailand's top courses.

Malaysia: Affordable PGA Courses with Relaxation in One

Malaysia offers excellent golf courses in Kuala Lumpur and popular tourist destinations like Kota Kinabalu. The golf costs are also affordable, and players can choose whether to use a cart or caddie, allowing for varied golfing experiences based on personal preference. While fees can vary between golf courses, even PGA/LPGA venues are not excessively expensive, and the comfortable atmosphere allows golfers to focus on their game, making them highly sought after.

  • Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC)

Known as KLGCC, this course will host the LPGA Maybank Championship again in October this year. It has previously held PGA tournaments and is considered one of Malaysia's top golf courses. Located near Kuala Lumpur city center, it offers the convenience of enjoying both golf and sightseeing.

  • The Els Club Desaru Coast

Designed by Ernie Els and Vijay Singh, this course is a premier golf destination in the Johor (Johor Bahru) region. Johor is close to Singapore, and the course provides the enjoyment of golfing with sea views. Even on weekends, green fees are around 400 ringgit (approximately 12,000 KRW).
